Sustainable design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment, and the health and comfort of building occupants, thereby improving building performance. The basic objectives of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimize waste, and create healthy, productive environments. Sustainable design principles include the ability to: optimize site potential; minimize non-renewable energy consumption; use environmentally preferable products; protect and conserve water; enhance indoor environmental quality; and optimize operational and maintenance practices. Utilizing a sustainable design philosophy encourages decisions at each phase of the design process that will reduce negative impacts on the environment and the health of the occupants, without compromising the bottom line. It is an integrated, holistic approach that encourages compromise and tradeoffs. Such an integrated approach positively impacts all phases of a building's life-cycle, including design, construction, operation and decommissioning.

Hall Beach, located on the shore of Foxe Basin on the Melville Peninsula, was created when a Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line site was built in the area in 1957 to help monitor Canadian air space in the north. The DEW line site has since been replaced by a modern North Warning System radar facility in the community. Hall Beach is traditionally referred to as Sanirayak, or "one that is along the coast", and is known for spectacular Arctic char fishing and an abundance of marine mammals, including one of the largest walrus populations in the Arctic. Potential non-renewable resources in the region include: iron, coal, gold, diamonds, uranium, and base metals. Land Use Planning Approved Land Use Plan The community of Hall Beach is not yet covered by an approved land use plan. Draft Nunavut Land Use Plan Between 2004 and 2011, NPC staff visited every Nunavut community to conduct individual "Use and Occupancy Mapping" interviews to collect information on traditional land use activities "within living memory".

Picking up from the last post, our Hawaiian Airlines flight landed in Oahu at 9:21 a. m., we were in our Corvette rented through Turo shortly thereafter, and we were picking up our tickets for the 11 a. m. USS Arizona tour at Pearl Harbor with time to spare. Obviously not all inter-island flights will run that smoothly, but we had no issues. Is it fun to wake up at 6 a. to return a rental car and get to the airport? Not exactly. But if you're willing to endure that small annoyance I think you'll find early-morning flights between islands leave you plenty of vacation time. From Pearl Harbor we headed to the North Shore with stops at Green World Coffee (worth it) and the Dole Plantation (meh). Coming from Kauai, we found the traffic and parking even on the North Shore to be problematic. We live in a major city and so are no strangers to crowds, but the contrast from Kauai was stunning. We drove through Haleiwa, ate a slice of pie at Ted's Bakery, and had a drink at Turtle Bay Resort before checking into the Courtyard Oahu North Shore in Laie (used a free night cert).
