Overview Scotty's Castle is a two-story Spanish Villa located in northern Death Valley National Park, California, USA. It is also known as Death Valley Ranch. Scotty's Castle is not a real castle, and it did not belong to the "Scotty" from whom it got its name. Scotty's Castle in Death Valley History Walter Scott, also known as "Death Valley Scotty", convinced Chicago millionaire Albert Johnson to invest in his (fraudulent) gold mine in the Death Valley area. Johnson made many trips to the area, eventually bringing his wife, Bessie Johnson. Over the course of his visits Johnson came to terms with a disability that lingered from an 1894 accident. Bessie apparently became convinced that Death Valley was good for his health. She encouraged the idea of building something more comfortable than the rough shack Johnson had built earlier. Construction began on Scotty's Castle (Death Valley Ranch) in 1922, at a cost of $1. 4 million dollars. Johnson eventually forgave Scott for his fraudulent scheming, and the two became friends.

Then it turned out that somehow the surveying crew that had drawn out the property lines had made errors, and in fact the house was located on US Govt. land as part of Death Valley National Monument. The Church group did a swap with the FDR administration, giving it the house and land in return for some other land further away which they then sold at a profit, and the Castle became part of the tourist path of wonders that is Death Valley---nowadays the parks service rangers do an amazing job, actually dressing in 1930's period costumes and playing the living-history roles of guests of Scotty from the time. He's buried there, btw, up on a hill overlooking his "Castle" and it is a VERY wonderful place to visit--about a 3 hour drive from Las Vegas. Visit their homepage by clicking here. The Strange Story of Scotty's Castle It's not really a castle, just a big house with a tower - and Scotty never owned it. Its formal name is Death Valley Ranch, but everyone just calls it Scotty's Castle. This big house in the California desert has an interesting and colorful history, all related to the man for whom it's named, a California character called Death Valley Scotty. He was born Walter Scott, but by the time he got to Death Valley, he had been a rodeo cowboy and wild-west-show performer. He claimed to own a gold mine in Death Valley. Albert Johnson, president of Chicago's National Life Insurance Company invested in the mine but grew suspicious of Scotty's intentions. He went west to California for a visit, and instead of having a confrontation with the con man, he started a lifelong friendship with an unlikely person. Johnson's health improved in the California desert climate, and he built a vacation home here. Johnson visited occasionally, but Scotty was the one who took up residence in the house, claiming he built it with his gold mine proceeds and calling it Scotty's Castle.

The largest national park outside Alaska, Death Valley is an almost unfathomable place. The park's 3. 3 million acres encompass mountain-size sand dunes, below-sea-level salt flats, mysterious singing rocks and colourful sandstone canyons. Extremes are the norm: Death Valley is the hottest and driest place in America, with summer temperatures peaking above 49°C, and average rainfall of 2 inches per year. Also extreme are the park's elevations: Badwater Basin, the park's lowest spot, rests at 282 feet below sea level while Telescope Peak soars to 11, 049 feet. So go high, or go very, very low; get hot, or chill out with amazing desert views. Death Valley delivers on every end of the scale.
