After a great walk through the woods, along the river, the waterfalls, gold mining remains and whole valley, we were keen to find out more about the history, etc. So we drove to the "Visitors Centre" to find it closed at 4pm and that we had to pay nevertheless for parking. Next day we made a special 35-min drive to the centre again, full of anticipation. We found the Centre was shut apart from the cafe for take-away only. The "Visitor Centre" ship was there but screened off and we could not look at or buy anything. As for the information we had come to see, this very small display in a corner of the cafe was also screened off, but just accessible. While reading with interest how the ore was ground and the gold extracted, I was told by the supervisor that it was closed and it was made clear that I should come out. We all left the Centre immediately feeling very disappointed, paid again for parking, and drove the 35 mins home again. The young local receptionist had told us it was not closed due to there not being as many or more visitors than usual, but because of company policy!
